What counts as an oversized load?
A vehicle or load is classed as oversized (an abnormal load) if it exceeds the general limits for road transport. The key thresholds are: width 2.55 m (2.60 m for refrigerated bodies), height 4.00 m, length 16.50 m for articulated vehicles and 18.75 m for road trains; axle load typically 10–12 t per axle; gross weight generally 40 t in the EU. Above these limits, the haulage requires a special permit and in many cases an escort and a prescribed route.
Regulations and permits
Oversized transport requires legal and administrative preparation. In the permit, the authority specifies the approved route, whether an escort is required, any time restrictions and the safety conditions. Depending on the nature of the haulage, either an individual or a general permit can be applied for.
The oversized transport process
1) Briefing and planning
Once the exact dimensions and weight of the load have been recorded, we select the best vehicle for the job (for example a low-bed or extendable low-loader) and carry out a preliminary risk assessment (bridges, tunnels, height restrictions, turning radii).
2) Route and permits
A detailed route plan forms the basis of the permit application. Where necessary, we arrange diversions, temporary traffic restrictions and infrastructure checks (e.g. bridge load capacity).
3) Escort and insurance
An escort is mandatory for very large or heavy loads. Adequate liability and equipment insurance is also in the customer's interest.
4) Loading and securing
Weight distribution and professional load securing (chains, ratchet straps, edge protectors) are crucial. We carry out an itemised check before every departure.
5) Transport and unloading
The haulage usually takes place during off-peak hours. At the destination, specialist unloading solutions (e.g. cranes, winches) ensure a safe finish.
Domestic and international haulage
Within the EU, the basic principles are similar, but permits are issued separately in each country. For cross-border haulage, coordinating paperwork and escorts is key to meeting deadlines. Common destination countries: Austria, Germany, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic.
Vehicle and low-loader types
- Low-bed low-loader: for heavy machinery, with a low centre of gravity.
- Extendable low-loader: for extra-long loads (tanks, beams).
- Modular trailer: for extreme weights (even over 100 t), with configurable axles.
- Tilting/tilt-deck platform: for low-built or hard-to-move machinery.
Typical oversized loads
- Construction and road-building machinery (excavators, dozers, cranes, asphalt pavers)
- Industrial tanks, silos and boilers
- Railway wagons, ship hulls and aircraft parts
- Wind turbine components (blades, towers)
- Concrete and steel structures, bespoke industrial equipment
Practical tips for customers
- Measure accurately: even a difference of a few centimetres can trigger a permit requirement.
- Timing: arranging permits and an escort can take 3–10 days.
- Advance site information: roadworks, closures, access restrictions.
- A reliable partner: decades of experience = less risk and fewer delays.
